What are the essentials?
I should preface this post with “the essentials” are going to vary for each person and trip. Before you start packing, make a list of activities and events that you will be doing so that you can plan appropriate clothing for them. This packing post is on my upcoming trip to Italy and France for 24 days.
What will we be doing?
- Traveling by train
- Bike riding
- Walking, walking, walking
- Visiting churches/art museums
- Attending classical music concerts
- Dining
- Laundry access
These things are all important to think about as I generate my packing list. Generally, I prefer to fly with only carry on luggage if at all possible. It just makes life easier. Also, on this trip, my husband and I will traveling by train, so I don’t want to be lugging around a beast of a suitcase trying to board/disembark. Trust me, I’ve done it, and it isn’t fun.

Last summer, I really enjoyed biking in the vineyards and through the small towns south of Beaune. This summer, I plan to do even more biking, so bike shorts will be on my packing list this year:)
As a rule, I average at least 10 miles of walking during European trips. That being said, wearing comfortable shoes for walking is key for an enjoyable trip. Make sure you have some miles on your shoes before you go. There is nothing worse than having blisters on your feet on vacation. Well, there are worse things, but… Usually, I take two pairs of shoes: Chacos for sightseeing and a pair of Vionics for dinner/evening events.
When packing, I plan for comfortable but appropriate for the days activities. Mixing, matching and accessorizing can really stretch your vacation wardrobe. My staples are light dresses, skorts, a couple of blouses and a few t shirts, and a versatile scarf. All of which dry relatively quickly.
Another important thing to think about is laundry access. Packing for a longer trip with only carry on luggage would get pretty stinky without doing laundry. We all know how to wash in the sink when needed, but I plan for where can I have laundry done properly. It may be that where I am staying has a facility or it can be sent out. On this trip, most of my lodging has laundry facilities (which is something I filter for when searching). BONUS!
In the end, it is your trip, so do want makes you happy! If you like to tote around tons of luggage or can afford someone to carry it for you, go for it! If want to travel for 18 days out of a backpack without doing laundry and smelling ripe, do it. This is just how I plan for mine, and I am just about packed and ready to go!

Keep electronics and cords organized using whatever works for you.
Below are front and back pictures of my quart sized bag of liquids and gels. These are my essentials. I can always pick up anything else I might need.
